To celebrate its 10th anniversary, CRANN, the Science Foundation Ireland funded nanoscience unit, based at Trinity College Dublin, debuted the “worlds smallest birthday cake”, invisible to the naked eye.
The nanocake was etched on to a gold coin using an advanced microscope that magnifies to the nanoscale, a scale which is one million times smaller than a grain of salt.
It has ‘candles’ that are 5,000 times smaller than the width of a full stop and bears the message CRANN – 10 years of science, innovation and impact.
But no, we can’t eat it….
