A moving message found on a torn up Christmas card has captured the internet’s imagination.
The note, which was found by a curious commuter and uploaded to Reddit, has inspired plenty of speculation about the sender, receiver and their story.
Reddit user burritobattlefield explained that he found the ripped up card on a train in Melbourne, Australia.
It read:
“Have a happy Christmas PS. Stop drinking, get help from someone. Bad things happen to good people sometimes, but how you react to these things is what defines you.
“You always have a choice, there are better things ahead for you but it’s in your hands, it’s your responsibility.”
Members of the Reddit community were touched by the message and joined in a discussion about the possibilities behind the mystery note.
On user wrote:
“God damn that’s depressing. Especially because you don’t know what happened to make them an alcoholic. Was it just a bad breakup, or did someone they loved more than life die?
“I say this because of the “bad things happen to good people, it’s how you react that defines you” part. Makes me think something bad happened in their life that made them turn heavily to alcohol.”
Another user said:
“It could be a mother to her son. Maybe the son started drinking. Got addicted. Couldn’t stop drinking. Lost his job. Lost his wife. Etc. This could be anything.
“Of course, the heart-breaking part is that the card is torn up. Clearly not a message they wanted to hear.”
Another commented: “It could be someone trying to get a friend help, only to be brutally rejected. It could be someone confused as to how to even begin trying to get their friend help. It could be so many different things, and the only ones who will ever know are the writer and the receiver, if any.”
