An ice rink attraction in Japan has caused outrage because it features 5,000 dead fish frozen underneath the ice. The ice rink in Space World, in Kitakyushu, has been heavily criticised and as a result has been forced to close the skating venue.
It was called the “Freezing Port–Ice Museum” and the park’s aim was to allow its visitors to have a sense of sliding on the sea.
Soon after it opened, the park was inundated with complaints with people calling it “vulgar”, “immoral” and “cruel”.
A lot of people first thought that the fish were frozen alive which caused even more upset, but the park confirmed they weren’t.
A spokesperson for the park told the Asahi Shimbun, “We purchased fish hauled and sold dead at a market through a dealer. Misunderstanding spread on the Internet that the fish were frozen alive, but that was not the case. We should have explained more.”

Space World released a statement through their Twitter account confirming that the attracton would be closed saying, “Everyone seemed to be uncomfortable about ‘Ice Aquarium’ deeply apologize. ‘Ice Aquarium’ plan will be suspended.”
