There are certain meals that only mothers can make.
Okay, okay that isn’t strictly true but it still seems that no matter how many times we attempt cooking the below dishes, we just can’t do them justice the same way our Mammies can.
Oh and after putting together this piece, we’re starving. It might be time to ring home and persuade Mam that cooking for us is the perfect way to spend her evening…
Soda bread
Is there anything as good as homemade brown bread?! A thick slice complete with (real) butter and a dollop of jam/marmalade depending on your preference. We’re practically salivating at the thought.

Christmas Dinner
Some might say this is similar to a roast but we think Christmas dinner deserves a mention all of its own. Turkey and ham and ALL of the trimmings. If you’ve made this yourself, your mother may have been the one to show you the ropes. Thanks Homer for demonstrating EXACTLY how we feel after Christmas dinner.

A Roast
Chicken, beef, lamb, whatever the meat of choice it’s only Mammy who can make a good roast. No one can make gravy quite like hers and as for those crispy roast potatoes, why can’t we get our spuds to taste the same?
Egg & Soldiers
We know it’s a meal you have when you’re a child but if you’re in need of a bit of home comfort, you can’t go wrong with a boiled egg and toast. Only Mam knows exactly how you like the egg, possibly better than you know yourself!
Scones
Hot, cold, butter, jam, plain, currants, clotted cream… we actually LOVE scones. Nothings beats a scone made by Mammy’s fair hands, throw in a large pot of tea and we’re on cloud nine.

Apple Tart
This might be the only thing that can top scones. A slice of apple tart together with fresh whipped cream (obviously we will take ice cream if it’s going too). Comfort food at its best.
Homemade Soup
This is healthy and tasty, a winning combination in our eyes. Every Mammy has her own speciality: vegetable, tomato, mushroom, potato and leek or chicken, a particular favourite. Team this with the soda bread mentioned earlier, a taste bud explosion.

Bacon & Cabbage
It’s not to everyone’s taste but there’s no denying that Mam is the only one who can make this particular dish. The cabbage might spread a certain aroma around the house but if you’re a fan of this meal, you’re sure to get over it.

Coddle
If you’re a Dublin native you’re sure to have experienced this skinless sausage concoction. A type of stew, it’s an acquired taste but we’re told it’s a must try in the capital city (and only Mammies can make it properly).
