If you’re lucky enough to be still in college, congrats – the world is your oyster! But as you’re no doubt aware, it’s a very difficult jobs market out there and if graduation is looming for you it’s time to get in gear.
It’s all too easy to get wrapped up in the final hurrah of college, and by all means do enjoy it, but don’t forget that once those final exams and parties are over there are thousands of others across the country beginning their search for gainful employment.
Beat the hordes, and be proactive now.
First things first, update your CV.
How do I sell myself?
Keep the CV to two pages max, unless otherwise specified in the job description. Make sure all details are up to date, honest and relevant to the job you’re applying for.
Personalise a cover letter for each position you apply for, as generic cover letters will bore possible employers. Remember to be interesting, use plain English (no big words!) and sell yourself hard.
Have a look at SpunOut.ie’s info on how to make a classy cover letter as well as tips for nailing that job interview.
Where to go?
If you don’t have commitments like children or a mortgage, many more doors are open to you than a traditional full-time gig, (and they’re pretty damn tough to get!) so consider everything! Have a think about the possibilities:
Internships:
There are so many pros and cons to internships these days, particularly with controversial schemes like JobBridge, but internships can be a really good way of getting experience and real life skills after college.
The downside to this is that many internships are unpaid, but often you’ll find that some expenses are covered. If you’re thinking of jumping aboard the intern ship, have a read of SpunOut’s tips.
Emigration:
You might want to do the popular thing at the minute and head to Oz or Canada for warmer climes for a while. There can be a bit of red tape around working abroad and the types of visas you need for different countries or working just for the summer etc. and a lot of forms to fill out but don’t worry, SpunOut.ie has got your back. Alternatives:
This isn’t for everyone and if you think you can go it alone, do!
Working freelance and for yourself can suit a lot of people with flexible hours and variety of work and is much easier these days with smartphones and mobile technology.
Volunteering might also be something to suit people over the summer with many charities and NGOs crying out for assistance. It not only looks great on CVs but will also give you the feel good factor.
