The Irish women’s hockey team has booked their place in the quarter-finals of the World League semi-finals thanks to victory over Uruguay in a thriller on Saturday afternoon.
A 55th minute goal from Aine Connery sent Ireland on their way to victory and this win, coupled with their win over South Africa, has ensured them a spot in the knock-out stages.
Ireland were leading Uruguay 2-0 by the early stages of the second half thanks to goals from Anna O’Flanagan and Nikki Evans.
However, Uruguay were on hand to punish Ireland’s lack of discipline – resulting in four yellow and two green cards – to come back and tie the game at 2-2 by the 44th minute.
A lifeline for Ireland came in the form of Connery’s goal and much to the delight of supporters, booked them a spot in the quarter-finals.
Up next they will face USA in the final group game this Tuesday (June 16th).
