Ireland has ranked joint sixth place in the top 10 places to live worldwide, beating New Zealand, Canada and New York in the survey.

Assessed by the Human Development Index (HDI), the UN used three categories to analyse the country’s developments – long and healthy lifestyle, access to knowledge and a decent standard of living.

Topping the list of the best places to live was Norway, who retained the spot for the seventh year running. It is believed this is greatly down to the healthy outdoor lifestyle, the ongoing developments in health and education and a life span that averages at 81.6 years old.

Sydney kept its spot at second place, while Switzerland again retained its place coming in third in the poll.

The top three were followed by Denmark at number four in the chart, while the Netherlands claimed the fifth spot.

Ireland tied with Germany for sixth place – which saw us move up two positions in this year’s list.

Rounding off the top ten was New York in eighth place, Canada in ninth and New Zealand nabbing the last spot.

The results were published by the UN in its annual Human Development Report.
