The Republic of Ireland Women’s team suffered a 1-0 defeat to Spain on Wednesday evening, but they won’t be letting that affect them as they look ahead to the upcoming Euro 2017 draw.
The two sides went head-to-head in an international friendly played off at the Mareo Stadium in Asturias.
A goal from Spain’s Jenni Hormoso sent them into a 1-0 lead after 47 minutes, before Irish vice-captain Louise Quinn’s effort was disallowed by the referee on 83 minutes.
Speaking afterwards, Quinn reflected on the game with some disappointment.
“I’m very disappointed we didn’t get something out of the game because we definitely deserved it on our second half performance,” she stated.

Quinn was disappointed with the result.
“We were poor in the first half but we really got it together after half-time and dominated the second half.
“We had control of the game, we were more comfortable on the ball and people wanted the ball.”
Indeed, Quinn seemed to have put the sides on level pegging when she headed home a Siobhan Killeen corner – however, the goal was not counted.
“I’ve watched the video and I still believe it should have counted,” she said.
“I had my eyes on the ball all the time and I used my arms to try and power myself up.
Meanwhile, next Monday, April 20th, will see the draw for the qualifying round of the Euro 2017 take place a.
“Even though we will be third seeds, the fact that two teams will go through from most groups, and the two worst runners-up get a play-off, means that if we get a decent draw we could have a very good chance of qualifying,” Quinn added.
