“Everything I loved about teaching is extinct.”

Last Tuesday, under the username ‘Iquityoucantfireme’, American teacher Ellie Rubenstein uploaded this video to YouTube, explaining why she was leaving her profession.

The ten minute video has since been viewed over 300,000 times.

Rubenstein, who taught fourth grade in an Illinois school, explains how at age 45, she left a career in advertising and decided to become at a teacher.

Rubenstein went to night school for three years and earned a master’s degree while working and caring for her young twins. In the video, Rubenstein eloquently explains why her love for her profession has steadily eroded in recent years.

Yesterday, Rubenstein posted a further note with her video, saying:

“The outpouring of love and support is overwhelming. I originally intended for this video to be watched by my administrators and my community; I had no idea it would reach so many. The thousands of stories already shared with me from around the globe that mirror my own are both critical and heartbreaking. I cannot change the system from within, so I leave to allow myself to continue teaching in my way, on my terms. I never planned on giving up, and I never will. I have the deepest respect and gratitude for those whose voices join with mine, and for those who are still fighting to find their own.”
