An explosion which occurred late Wednesday in Waco, Texas, has left hundreds injured, many feared dead and flattened buildings in the surrounding area, one a school, the other a nursing home. The town has now been evacuated with officials concerned about the aftermath of the explosion, placing the area on high alert.

The numbers of dead and injured have not yet been confirmed with State Governor Rick Perry claiming that they were waiting to hear the extent of the damage, according to the Wall Street Journal.

An American football pitch has been opened as a makeshift hospital to take in scores of the wounded.

The blast, which accorded about 7.50pm local time, sounded like bombs going off according to local residents. One particular witness claimed he heard the blast from over 45 miles away from where the event occurred.

Fire fighters are currently still battling the blaze at the scene, but are said to have the fire under control.
