If you love any excuse for a roadtrip adventure, it’s time to pack your bags and head to Killarney.

Beating off stiff competition from a land of castles, forests, adventure parks and museums, Killarney National Park has been dubbed ‘Ireland’s Best Day Out’ by a panel of judges from The Irish Times in conjunction with Discover Ireland.

Describing the 26,000 acre park as “stunning, accessible, magical”, ticking off a list of activities for tourists to enjoy including climbing, hiking, kayaking to visiting Ross Castle, Muckross House or taking a boat trip or pony-and-trap ride.

Killarney National Park scooped the win from a shortlist of attractions including the Antrim coast, the Barrow Way, Carlow, the Big Day Out in Leitrim and Clare Island Adventures.

According to The Irish Times, the competition looks at Ireland’s “most impressive visitor attractions, leisure experiences and outdoor destinations.”

The newspaper’s readers were asked to nominate their favourite spots in the country. More than 1,900 entries were received.
