Going to Bed with My Kindle Makes My Other Books Jealous

As a lover of books I never thought I would be an e-reader convert but I have fallen hard for my Kindle

I am a lover of all kinds of stories. Whether they are adventures, mysteries, romances or crime I love nothing more than curling up on the sofa with a good book. My bookshelf buckles under the pressure of the hundreds of novels I have read over the years, some many times over.

When Santa dropped a Kindle underneath the Christmas tree last year, I was skeptical of this alien reader. With the Kindle I would no longer be able break the spine of an enthralling read or dog-ear my chapter before bed. The art of passing a novel from friend to friend is a disappearing one. However, before I judged this new electronic device I thought it was best to give it a chance.

I purchased The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern and sat down in front of a winter fire with my new e-reader and ever since that first electronic flick of the page I have been hooked. It is the best present I have ever been given.

The Kindle is easier to read in bed and a breeze on public transport. I have indulged in Fifty Shades of Grey and equally cringe worthy trash without judgment from other commuters. The device’s non-shine screen does not strain your eyes and if you have problems reading small print a simple click of a button will enlarge the words to any size you want.

I thought the issue of charging my new e-reader would be an annoyance, especially if it only had the battery power of a mobile phone. To my surprise, I rarely have to stock up on power and my Kindle has only died once in its lifetime.

My bookshelf had been desperately jealous of me spending all this time in bed with my new shiny Kindle and I made the decision last month to give them away to somebody who might be able to show them a little love. I packed them up in cardboard boxes and took a spin down to my local charity shop.

My room is now cleared of my dusty novels and only a few of my favourites remain. If you haven’t guessed this was a big deal for me but I have come to terms with my decision. The truth of the matter is that I have fallen in love with someone else and that someone is a Kindle. I’d advise every reader to give the Kindle a chance because as soon as you have, you will know what love really is!
