She is the face of the cult television show, ‘Gavin and Stacey’. Well, half the face, and the Welsh actress is branching out quickly to the big screen.
She is finally getting to play the maternal roles and actress Joanna Page is excited, if a bit broody too.
“Most actresses moan about playing mums,” Page tells the Irish Daily Mirror, “but it’s really nice for me. Because I’ve always looked so young , I’ve tended to play the ingénue. I feel grown up when I’m cast as a mum.
“I always think people won’t believe it or take it seriously but, actually, I’m enjoying getting older, I’m finally getting to play grown ups!”
In Page’s upcoming film, ‘Nativity 2’, opposite David Tennant, the actress got a taste of pregnancy when she had to wear a huge prosthetic baby bump.
“My character, Mrs Peterson, is nine months pregnant with twins, so everyone who came on set and didn’t know the storyline would start stroking it telling me congratulations.”
As well as playing a mum-to-be on the big screen, Page is getting the chance to experience motherhood on the small screen. Her latest TV role, Sky Living’s new six-part comedy ‘Gates’, starts tomorrow and follows the story of a group of parents who meet everyday at the school gates.
“I’ve two children in the series, a seven and a nine-year-old,” she said.
Page said she is not feeling the pressure to start her own family with actor husband James Thornton but did admit the filming made her broody.
“I’m in no rush. We’ve been together ten years but I was only 24 when we first met,” Page says.
“But I can’t wait to be a mum. I think I’d be quite good. I’d be strict and spoiling at the same time. James is one of four so he just thinks we’re going to have loads but I’m just going to let Mother Nature take its course.”
Page’s new series ‘Gates’ starts at 8:30pm, Tuesday, August 14th on Sky Living.
