We all know the dangers of talking on a phone or texting while driving, yet so many people still do it, causing hundreds of unnecessary motoring accidents a year.
And, in an effort to clamp down on the number of accidents, Gardai have been issued with special powers to check the mobile phone records of anyone who has been involved in a road accident.
The new powers will help Gardai to determine if a motorist involved in a serious collision was using a mobile phone at the time of the incident.

The Irish Independent is reporting that over 140 new motoring measures will come into play over the next couple of months. These measures include making sure a car has undergone a NCT, before it can be issued with motor tax, a clampdown on drivers suffering from a serious illness, ensuring that they have written permission from their doctor and making it compulsory to keep a first aid kit in the car.
The report also discusses a greater promotion of safe cycling to increase the number of cyclists on our roads.
