What a game!

All eyes were on Connacht on Sunday as the ladies football provincial finals took place.

In the senior final, it was the clash of the titans as Mayo and Galway went head-to-head in an epic encounter.

In what proved to be an absolute thriller, it was the women in maroon and white who took the honours on the smallest of margins, 0-21 to 1-17, after a cracking game.

Cora Staunton was a powerful force up front.

Mayo’s shining star Cora Staunton kicked a whopping 1-15 for her side at MacHale Park, but it just wasn’t enough to topple the Tribeswomen who secured victory at the death.

In fact, with just twelve minutes gone, it looked like Galway would storm to victory as they led 0-7 to 0-1.

However, a heroic display from Mayo kept the crowd on the edge of their seats, and they were unlucky not to topple Galway from their throne.

By half-time, Mayo had closed the gap to just two points, 0-11 to 0-9, teeing up a thriller of a second half – and indeed, what a half it proved to be.

With scores raining in at either end, it was hard to call who would come out victorious on the final whistle.

Staunton showed her class in front of the goal on numerous occasions, not least when she hit the net after selling a dummy to the ‘keeper.

With five minutes to go, a superb score from Roisin Leonard tied the game at 0-19 to 1-16, and when Staunton replied at the other end, many would have been betting on Mayo to hold out for a win.

However, Tracey Leonard – one of the stand-out stars for the Tribeswomen – kept her composure to tie the game. galway winners

Then, it all came down to substitute Patricia Gleeson who showed nerves of steel to score the winning point with barely any time left on the clock.

Meanwhile in the Intermediate championship, Leitrim took the title after a tense win over Sligo on Sunday, 1-17 to 1-14.

Leading by 1-10 to 1-6 at the break, Leitrim had to stay strong to stop a determined Sligo from edging their way to victory.

A stand-out performance from Leitrim’s Dearbhaile Beirne earned her the coveted Player of the Match title.
