Fundraisers to Help Grieving Buncrana Exceed €100,000

“A country united in grief to help this family”

Cassie Delaney

Fundraising pages set up to assist the family of those who lost their lives in the Buncrana pier incident have exceeded €100,000.

A JustGiving page established by Martin McGranaghan has raised over €81,000 and has received support from over 3,000 people.

Martin writes:

“Every time I log into this page I’m lost for words so many generous people out there thank you to each and every one of you.”

The initial intention for the page was to alleviate any financial pressures for the family and to “financial worries the last thing on their minds.”

Martin was astounded by the support and wrote on March 27th:

“A country united in grief to help this family, just lost for words, you all have done a wonderful thing for them from the bottom of my heart thank you to each and every one of you who has donated can’t thank you enough for what you have done.”

Another page established by Michelle Black has raised over €24,000 with 918 supporters.

Michelle writes:

“There’s no words we can say or anything we can do to change what happened … But what we can do is help show our support to the family of the victims.”

Donegal priest, Fr. Paddy O’Kane says he has visited mum Louise McGrotty every day since the accident.

“I have visited Louise every day since it all happened. She is totally numb and can’t take in the enormity of it all,” he said.

He added:

“People have remarked how strong she has been, not only reading the poem and those words to Davitt at the funeral.

“She also went to Buncrana on Sunday evening where she thanked those who came to the prayer service at the shore front. I also attended.”

A concert called With Love will be held in Buncrana this coming Friday to raised more funds for the family.
