Eleven Things That Parents Always Whisper To Themselves

They thought we couldn't hear them, but we could...

Sue Murphy

Well, whatever you did, you certainly got on the wrong side of either your mother or father, or if it was a really bad offence, both of them. Did you ever notice your parents would silently whisper things to themselves when they were really annoyed? Here are eleven of them…

1. I Just Can’t Believe It

This was usually uttered in an exasperated tone when your parents thought there was literally nowhere else that you could go wrong. They were wrong.

2. Here We Go Again

Depending on the new phase that week, this was often said in a sigh. For example: “Mam, I really like Take That.” Mother to herself: “Here we go again.” Child/Teenager: “What?” Mother: “Sorry, what?”

3. I Swear To God

About…?

4. F**k’s Sake!

Did you curse? I HEARD YOU!

5. God, give me patience.

What happens when you don’t have patience?

6. Beam me up, Scotty!

Who’s Scotty?

7. I Talk to the Trees

Sorry, I wasn’t listening. What were you saying?

8. I Give Up

So.. what happens now then?

9. Give me a break!

Depending on the tone, this can mean any number of things. Either they want a genuine break or just a break from you.

10. No, I’m fine thinks. I didn’t want a cup of tea.

“Oh, sorry! Did you want tea?”
“Oh NOW you ask!”
“I… What?”

11. What did I do to deserve this?

Just leave the house immediately. You’re not coming back from that one.
