A draft report has been leaked into the investigation of the death of Savita Halappanaavar. The report, which will be published today in the Evening Herald, not only points to the possible infection but contains details of medical failures.
Details emerged today that Savita may have suffered from a blood infection that went undiagnosed and that staff at the hospital should have called for an abortion days before her death. Her family claimed that Savita had asked for an abortion but was denied the request.
The Minister for Health James Reilly has not yet received the report and has refused to comment on the draft report. Mr Reilly commented that he hoped to have the final report within the next ten days.

However, Minster Pat Rabbitte hinted on Newstalk Breakfast this morning that the report may allow the government to legislate for the X case on abortion. The Minister commented “That seems to me to be more tangible, hard evidence than we might have expected to support the measures embarked on by Government to legislate for the X case.”
Ms. Halappanaavar was admitted to Galway University Hospital in October and passed away on the October 28th when she was just seventeen weeks pregnant. The final draft of the report has now been issued to those involved in the case in order to make any challenges to the findings.
