Coffee Fan? You’re Really Not Going To Like This News…

This is not a drill.

If, like us, you rely on a cup of coffee to see you through your working day, this news could be about to ruin your weekend.

We’re facing a coffee shortage. *Deep breaths*

It seems you’re not the only one clinging to caffeine to see you through those work days, and now the country that supplies most of our coffee, Brazil, is facing the fact it can’t meet the recent global production projections.

According to the latest stats, it is suggested that 40 million to 50 million more bags of coffee will be consumed within the next decade, a huge increase coupled with other factors like climate change and low prices affecting coffee farmers.

These figures come courtesy of Andrea Illy, the chairman and CEO of Italian coffee company illy.

Speaking to Bloomberg, the coffee connoisseur said:

“Sooner or later, in months or years, we’ll have to make a bold decision about what to do. We don’t know where this coffee will come from.”

Illy also points out that the 2015-2016 coffee production season is already kicking off at a deficit of 3.5 million bags, while global consumption is estimated to increase by a third to 200 million bags by 2030.

While there’s no immediate panic, we’re definitely going to stockpile a few jars in the house.

Just in case.
