Police in the Indian city of Kolkata have confirmed they have arrested a man in relation to the rape of an Irish charity worker in the city.

The 21-year-old filed a case on Saturday after she claimed she was drugged and raped after her birthday party by the man. The woman in question said she was assaulted in a semi-conscious state after drinking a cup of tea at the 25-year-old businessman’s house.

The Irish engineering student had come to India to volunteer for a children’s charity. The woman had apparently made friends with the accused when they met at a market and arranged to go out.

A trade body has confirmed that the number of females visiting in India has dropped following several attacks that were widely reported.

The woman has been sent for a medical examination at a state-run hospital.
