The village of Buncrana and beyond were rocked this weekend when five people lost their lives in a horrific tragedy.

Sean McGrotty, 49, his sons Mark, 12, and Evan, 8, his mother-in-law Ruth Daniels, 59, and her daughter, Jodie Lee, 14, tragically died when their vehicle slipped into Lough Swilly from a pier in Buncrana.

Four-month-old baby girl Rionaghac-Ann is the sole survivor of the tragedy, after being saved from the vehicle by a passerby, Davitt Walsh.

In the days since, the authorities and family members of the McGrotty‘s have thanked Walsh, dubbed a “hero”.

Now, a Facebook post calling for the former League of Ireland footballer to be nominated for a special Presidential award is gathering huge momentum online.

Alive Diver writes:

‘Let’s get local Hero Davitt Walsh nominated for a special presidential award, for outstanding bravery in the face of overwhelming adversity in the rescue of the baby in the Buncrana tragedy…
