This year we at Her.ie have paired up with the Irish Cancer Society for the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon.
Over the coming months we’ll be recruiting readers to join us, (you can do so here!), and bringing you training tips and inspirational testimonials from those who have taken on the challenge before, as well as women who work with the Irish Cancer Society, or those who have been on the receiving end of the service.
Today is the first in our Uphill Challenge Made Easy features, a reminder that training, though tough, can be both fun and exciting. We’re suggesting that you skip the gym once a week, and instead of the treadmill head for the great outdoors and take your fitness preparations to one of Ireland’s many natural beauty spots. Become a tourist in your own land in the months ahead of the June run – training has never looked so lovely! We’re starting with some Munster looped hill walks, and we’ll be travelling around the country in the coming weeks…
Munster Hill Walks to Try:
Kerry
In the Kingdom, try the Lúb na Cille looped walk at Dunquin. It’s about 5 kilometres long and a pretty easy route, so this is a good one to get you started! The looped trail should take you somewhere between 90 minutes to 2 hours.
Clare
In the Banner, we’re suggesting the Doonbeg Loop along the West Coast. Another walk that fits into the ‘easy’ grade, but longer so a greater challenge for beginners! The loop here will take you over 8 kilometres of beautiful Clare scenery. For even more adventurous souls, Doonbeg also offers the Tullaher Loop, which is 20 kilometres longs.
Cork
Off to the Cork coast for our third suggestion this week – the Sheep’s Head Loops. There is a choice of a short or long loop here, so you can take yourself over a 4 km loop or a 16 km loop, both are more challenging than the Clare and Kerry options we mentioned so make sure to reward yourself at the end!
