Meet 23-year-old woman Harnaam Kaur, who’s growing a beard and embracing her beauty within.
Kaur suffers from polycystic ovary syndrome, an endocrine disorder that causes hirsutism or excessive hair growth.
At just the age of 11, Kaur noticed that hair around her face was growing and she spent many years of her teenage life trying to remove it and hiding herself in baggy clothes.
According to Barcroft TV: “The primary school teaching assistant endured vile abuse at school and strangers would stare at her on the street”.
“Harnaam became so self conscious she refused to leave her house, except to go to lessons, and at her lowest point she began self-harming and even considered taking her own life.”
At 16, Harnaam decided to embrace Sikhism, which emphasises that followers should maintain their natural body including hair growth. Through these beliefs, the young woman was able to gain confidence and shake away the bullies who mocked her.
“This is me, this is who I am. It’s my inner beauty, it’s my outer beauty” concludes Harnaam.
“This is my wholeness. I’m different and I’ve learned to accept it fully.”
