We may have had a glorious extra hour of sleep last night but that doesn’t make up for the number of dark and cold winter evenings we’ll be putting up with for the next few months.
The change in the number of daylight hours can affect some of us more than others and the winter can contribute to a general feeling of weariness.
However, Her.ie is, as always, here to help. Here’s our advice when it comes to battling the winter blues.
Go To Bed Earlier
It may seem like the obvious solution to battling the tiredness but altering your bedtime by even 15 minutes can make a different. This is especially useful for children. In the summer, staying up late was easier for your body to cope with due to the abundance of daylight hours but make it a priority to be tucked up in bed to catch your much-needed winter Zzzzzs.
Drink Water
In winter you may not feel like drinking water but it is just as important to stay hydrated this season. If you’re cold, you can always boil the kettle and have a warm glass of water with lemon.

Don’t Sit In The Dark
You may have had the blinds pulled during the summer to prevent the bright morning sun, but in winter it is important to flood your home with light. Open all the curtains in your home and let the natural light in.
Avoid Technology
Try and turn off the telly and all of your electrical stimulants at least a half an hour before bed. Bright screens of mobile phones, televisions and computers will not help you wind down. Instead read a book or have a conversation with your other half before you nod off.

Chill out with a good book instead of going to bed with your computer
Pay Close Attention To Your Diet
If you’re feeling blue, it is important to make sure you are eating the right things in order to boost your mood and energy. Avoid processed foods and bad carbohydrates such as white bread, rice and pasta. Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables. If you’re feeling run down take a vitamin C supplement to boost your immune system.
Get Moving
In winter it is important to keep your body moving in order to stay positive and healthy. Go for a walk during your lunch break or do some early morning jumping jacks. In winter daylight is scarce so make the most of the sun!
