We all know that despite our best intentions, it’s nearly impossible to eat perfectly all of the time.
A sneaky bar of chocolate or packet of crisps can easily sneak their way into your hands, and before you know it, you’re left holding an empty wrapper.
While this definitely won’t help your long-term goals, apparently the odd sneaky treat aren’t doing as much damage as you might think in your quest to attain a slinkier you.
According to a study published in the journal Obesity, sleep deprivation is the greatest threat to dropping those last stubborn pounds.
So how can catching enough shut-eye shift those love handles?
As well as regulating blood sugar, which prevents cravings that can niggle at that sweet tooth, the study found that a proper deep sleep improved the chances of people making healthier life choices in the day.
A study of 189 people found that those who caught up on enough downtime woke up feeling more motivated to eat a nutritious breakfast, exercise during the day and make wiser food choices.
As well as a drop off in coffee and tea consumption, the natural increase in energy levels meant exhaustion didn’t force participants to grab comfort or energising food (which is usually high in saturated fats and sugar).
So while you might be miserably munching on your carrot sticks, consider making an early night part of your weight loss plans.
A fresh start could be the secret to success…
