1. Did you grow up to the rule that you had to eat everything on your plate?
For most of us, this is our problem.
So how about investing in a smaller plate?
Portion size is key.
A Cornell University study found that when a fixed portion of food was eaten from a larger plate, diners felt they had been given a smaller than average portion and so ate more.
When the same portion of food was eaten from a smaller dish, the meal seemed more substantial, so they ate less.
You can polish off the plate comfortably and enjoy your meal, safe in the knowledge that your portion size was healthy.
2. Write it down!
For one week, carry a notebook with you and jot down whatever food and drink you take in for the seven days.
This isn’t about punishing yourself if you have to write in “Monday – Chinese takeway”, that happens! It’s simply to make you more aware of what you eat everyday. Studies have shown that people who do keep a food diary eat on average 15 per cent less food than those who do not.
3. Bin the bland, and bring in some colour to your life (and plate)
There is a reason so many people choose low/no-carb diets, but there is no need to go to that extreme. By avoiding white foods; sugar, white rice, white flour etc., you can do wonders for your blood sugar levels and instantly boost your chances of weight loss.
Instead, for you card fix just rely on the brown alternatives; brown rice and wholegrain bread. One Harvard study found that those who indulged in over two servings of wholegrains daily were 49 percent less likely to be overweight than those who opted for white.
