Social media craze “No Make-Up Selfie” has resulted in hundreds of thousands of euros being donated to the Irish Cancer Society.

Urging online users to support cancer awareness, No Make-Up Selfies encouraged people to take images of themselves and tagging them with hashtags like #breastcancerawareness

LIKECHARITY, a service that enables you to donate to your favourite charities by simply sending a text message from your mobile phone, reports that the trend quickly turned pro-active with social media users promoting the service to make the most of the craze.

Online users began posting photos of their make-up free photo alongside a screenshot of their text donation –  resulting in ‘text PINK to 50300’ trending on Twitter.

The service reports that €200,000 was donated to the Irish Cancer Society.

It’s reported that donations spiked overnight on Facebook and Twitter with users raising over €40,000 within a single hour.

“Our aim is to make fundraising more efficient for charities, and make donating more accessible for the public – the Irish Cancer Society was quick to see the potential in mobile giving and it has benefitted them greatly both through their campaigns and through the strong reaction from the Irish public through sensations such as the no make-up selfie” said LIKECHARITY CEO Tadhg O’ Toole.

Since 1963, the Irish Cancer Society has been at the forefront of cancer care in Ireland, raising millions every year through campaigns like Daffodil Day and Shave or Dye.
