Eating out can test our healthy eating lifestyle, we all know that... Keep these simple-to-do tips in mind and be sure to enjoy yourself.

We’re all aiming for a healthy lifestyle, but the misconception is that you can’t have it and enjoy the special occasions…

Self-deprivation is the first step to failure when it comes to a healthy eating regime, so enjoy your Valentine’s evening tonight and if you need a little hand we’re here to suggest some healthy eating tips for you.

Here are small changes you can make to indulge intelligently on the holiday of love.

1. Instead of gorging on a box of chocolates… try eating fruit drizzled in some light whipped cream.

It’s still a thoughtful gift if you need to give one and it’s super low in calories.

2. Instead of eating out, try cooking at home tonight.

At home you can control your portion sizes and what goes into your meals.

3. Instead of a cocktail, try a glass of red wine.

Alcohol may seem innocent enough but it’s loaded with calories. When you add in mixers, juice, sugar and other ingredients, the calories can really add up. A glass of red wine is low in calories and has been shown to increase levels of “good cholesterol”.

4. Instead of ordering the main course, try and ask for a starter portion.

If you are eating out tonight, don’t be afraid to leave some food behind or, easier still, ask the waiter for a starter portion if it’s an extra-filling meal.

Happy Valentine’s…

5. Instead of stuffing yourself up (as delicious as it might be), try the mindful eating approach.

You might be all loved-up tonight but do think about what you’re eating. Sometimes when we are distracted we don’t think about what we are eating and don’t realise when we’re full.

6. Instead of being rushed, take your time.

Slow down when you’re eating. The food will be good, we know that, but it’s not a race to dessert. It can take up to 20 minutes for our brains to figure out that our stomachs are full.

7. Instead of starving yourself for tonight, make sure you eat during the day.

It might seem like a smart idea to “save” calories for the big event, but it’s an event that can backfire. Have frequent snacks or meals throughout the day as you always would, this can prevent you from overeating.

8. Instead of supping away to your heart’s content, keep alcohol intake to a minimum.

Not only is alcohol high in empty calories, especially those luxurious cocktails, but having too much to drink can encourage you to eat more too. Alcohol can decrease our ability to make a healthy food choice so drink sensibly.

PS. Instead of worrying yourself silly about calories and gym classes tonight, why not just make a few wise choices and enjoy yourself…
