Is Your “Low-Fat” Diet Causing You to Put on Weight?

Low-fat foods can sometimes be full of sugar and sneaky calories that can cause you to start piling on the pounds.

Most of us assume that low-fat foods are the way to go if we want to lose some weight, but did you know that the ‘saintly’ cereal you had for breakfast might not be as angelic as you originally thought?

A new study has revealed that ‘diet-friendly’ low-fat foods can actually be worse for us than the normal full-fat versions. Why? Well, apparently some of them can contain way more sugar than the full-fat option.

According to the consumer watchdog Which? there is a common misconception among us shoppers about the meaning of the terms ‘reduced fat’ and ‘light.’ Often when we see these words, we automatically assume that a product is healthy and good for us.

Do you read food labels while you’re doing your weekly grocery shop?

Rules on nutritional labelling state that ‘low fat’ foods must contain less than 3 per cent fat, while ‘reduced’ ‘light’ or ‘lite’ products must have 30 per cent less fat or saturated fat than the standard product.

So ladies, the next time you’re doing your grocery shopping make sure you check the labels and compare ‘low-fat’ products to their ‘full fat’ counterparts. That way you’ll know that you’re actually buying healthy foods that won’t thwart your attempts to lose weight.
