We always knew we took better care of ourselves, but this study proves it...

We’re always saying we take better care of ourselves than our Irish male counterparts, and this study proves us correct.

The research shows that Irish women take better care of their eye health than men do.

The survey, commissioned by Dublin-based opticians, Opticks Superior Eye-care, has revealed that women get their eyes tested more frequently than their male counterparts.

According to the study, us women visit the opticians on average once every 23 months, whereas the guys tend to hold off on the eye-checking, only visiting an eye-care specialist once every 29 months.

Incredibly, over 20 per cent of those surveyed who need glasses don’t have them. Is it because you just don’t know you need them? Then maybe it’s time you visited the optician for a check-up…

If it’s because you don’t want to wear glasses, then don’t worry, they’re one of the biggest fashion statements of the moment.

The research showed that one in three Irish people under the age of thirty either wear contact lenses or glasses.

And a total of 40 per cent of people between the ages of 30 and 40 wear glasses.

Of the spectacle wearers, 50 per cent of them use them just for the computer, a sign that our modern daily lives is having an effect on our health.

75 per cent need them for reading as well and 38 per cent also use them for driving and distant vision.

Computers may be affecting our eyes in more ways than one as 38 per cent of people admitted to having dry or itchy eyes, a common complaint of computer-users.

Make sure to give your eyes a break from the computer screen during the day and if it has a glare, don’t be afraid to readjust your computer or laptop.

Commenting on the results, Sven Spollen-Behrens, managing director and co-owner of the opticians said; “I know that men generally turn a blind eye to their health (pun intended?), but getting your eyes tested every two years doesn’t hurt and an eye exam can tell a lot about your health in general, not just your eyesight. It can tell us about high blood pressure, cholesterol or signs of diabetes.”

We say get them checked out guys…
