When we’re trying to watch what we eat and get a bit healthier, most of us immediately cross cheese off our list of regular foods. For years we’ve been told that too much can actually cause us to pile on the pounds rather than get rid of them.

But did you know that two slices of cheese a day could actually be good for you?

The Irish Daily Mail reports a group of scientists have discovered that cheese can help to prevent diabetes. According to the boffins, eating two slices of cheese a day can cut your risk of developing type-2 diabetes by 12 per cent. Not bad, right?

These findings majorly contradict current health guidelines, which tells us to cut back on dairy products like cheese in order to prevent diabetes. So who do we believe?

Cheese please: A way to stop diabetes?

The researchers, which include noted academics from the Medical Research Council in Cambridge, say that not all saturated fats are as harmful as others and that there are some that can be beneficial to the human body. The saturated fats found in cheese are generally considered to be ‘good’ fats.

But despite these findings, not everyone is convinced and campaigners are warning the public against gorging on cheese and dairy products.

“This study gives us no reason to believe that people should change their dairy intake in an attempt to avoid the condition,” said Dr Iain Frame, the director of research at Diabetes UK.
