While we would NEVER let stale milk pass our lips, we rarely even check the use-by date on our lipsticks.
Now, some (pretty horrifying) research has revealed that our out-of-date make-up could be harboring a scary amount of bacteria which could cause nasty infection.
Scientists at London Metropolis University tested five makeup products and found that out-of-date products contained potentially life-threatening levels of bacteria.
One more time for the people at the back – life threatening.
One of the bugs found, eubacterium, causes bacterial vaginosis – a vaginal infection similar to thrush which causes itching and foul smells.
CEO of escentual.com, who commissioned the research, explained the importance of being aware.
He said: “Most women are totally unaware that their cosmetics are a potentially breeding ground for deadly bacteria.
“But if you think about it you wouldn’t keep food for months after the use by date so why should this be acceptable for cosmetics.
“This research has even surprised us and has shown that there is a serious health risk here.
Excuse us while we go and burn our makeup bags and all of the contents.
