Her.ie Health Revolution: Top Tips to Avoid The Flu

It might not be as bad as manflu (ahem) but it's still pretty nasty. How to avoid getting the flu this winter...

Rebecca McKnight

If you’ve made it this far through winter without suffering the dreaded flu, congratulations! Good job.

But there’s a cold snap outside that we’re right in the middle of and you’re not out of the woods just yet – so keep these simple tips in mind and they’ll see you through to spring with no red nose or pounding head. Result!

  • Hands Off: Stop rubbing your face. Rubbing your eyes, mouth and nose is a quick way to introduce yourself to some nasty germs. Your hands come into contact with all manner of nasties every day.
  • Soap Up: Aformentioned grimy hands are the fastest way to spread germs, so make sure you wash yours regularly and use a hand sanitiser after coming in contact with door handles, elevator buttons and the likes. There’s no need to be a complete germaphobe but a couple of times a day could make a big difference.

Wash up: Make sure to wash hands with warm water and soap regularly

  • Eat Your Way To Immunity: To keep yourself in fighting form when it comes to warding off germs, make sure your diet includes plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and take supplements to help make up for any vitamins or minerals your current diet isn’t providing.
  • Don’t Be A Hero: If you’re fighting your way out of bed to get into work you’re not really helping anyone. Those nasty flu symptoms will be hiting your colleagues before the day is out. Stay home, rest, and get yourself back to full health ASAP.
  • Don’t Spread It: Making sure to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze should just be a matter of good manners, but it’s amazing how many people don’t bother! Make sure you’re not one of those guys, and you’re not spreading nasty germs further.
