Saturday night is awesome – you get dolled up, have a catch up with your girls and then hit the town for a night of dancing, laughing and a few cheeky drinks.
Sunday morning, however, is usually a different story (one that involves a splitting headache and, if you’re really unlucky, some vomit).
You know what we’re talking about here ladies – the dreaded post-night-out hangover. It happens to us all, and unfortunately, some of us are just prone to them.
But what if you actually have stuff to do on Sunday, other than weeping into your pillow and eating a breakfast roll in the vain hopes that it’ll cure you? Aside from abstaining from alcohol, is there any way to prevent a hangover?
These suggestions may not make you wake up completely hangover free tomorrow morning, but they will take the edge off a little bit…
Before you head out tonight…
1. Eat something fatty: Yes, you read that right. A greasy pizza, a plate of pasta that is laden down with carbs, a big, dirty burger – if you allow yourself one takeaway a week, then it’s a good idea to have it before you head on a night out when you know you’re going to be knocking back a few drinks.
Greasy foods are great because aside from being delicious, the fat contained within them sticks to your stomach lining for longer and thus, absorbs more alcohol.
If you’d rather opt for something a bit healthier then make sure you have a good, hearty dinner (think spuds, pasta or meat). The objective here is to put volume in your stomach, which will actually lessen the impact that alcohol has on your body.
You’ve probably heard this a million times before, but it is never a good idea to drink on an empty stomach.
2. Drink a glass of milk: Down a decent glass of milk before you hit the town. Milk coats the lining of your stomach and can actually minimize the amount of alcohol that your body absorbs.
While there isn’t any medical evidence to show that this genuinely works, it’s a tactic that many people use and hey, you’ll still be getting some of your daily calcium if you try it.
3. Take a spoonful of olive oil: Gross? Yes. Disgusting? You bet’cha! Will it stop you getting a hangover? It’s full of nutrients that can actually help your body out if you’re planning a night of drinking.
You might want to pour the olive oil over something instead though: pasta or a slice of bread. Drinking a spoonful of the stuff by itself is a bit intense…
4. Take some Milk Thistle: You can get Milk Thistle in tablet or liquid form from your local health food store. It’s a vitamin that boosts liver function, allowing your liver to process alcohol faster. A lot of people use this method to prep themselves for a night out.
While it won’t make you completely hangover-free, it will definitely make any symptoms you do have much more bearable when you wake up tomorrow morning.
5. Eat something and drink 3 pints of water when you come home: Yes, when you make it home after your night out, get yourself into the kitchen, whack on some toast and knock back 3 pints of water.
The food will settle your stomach and the water will re-hydrate you as you sleep, helping to ease that post-alcohol headache that you’re likely to have first thing in the morning.
Ladies what do you do when you have a hangover? Do you have any personal cures?
