Japanese Pickles

The Bacteria found in Suguki, a pickled turnip dish popular in Japan, can prevent the flu.
According to recent findings, published in the journal Letters in Applied Microbiology, Scientists have discovered that eating traditional Japanese pickles have “protective effects” that prevent people from catching the flu.

Lead researcher, Naoko Waki, from the Japanese food company Kagome said: “It has protective effects against influenza virus infection.”
The group of Japanese researchers believe that the protective layer of sugars called exopolysaccharides that protects the bacteria against acid stomach juices, could lie behind its powers.
“We know that exopolysaccharides have immune boosting effects in other similar bacteria,” Waki continued.
