Demi Lovato faces major backlash after promoting weight loss tea as ‘self love’

The body-positive singer is facing some serious backlash today after one sponsored Instagram post angered fans.

Demi Lovato has long been hailed a champion for self-love, so it came as no surprise when her latest post using the hashtag caused quite the debate online.

The spokeswoman for the National Eating Disorder took to Instagram to share a snap with the caption:

“This year is all about #SelfLove, truly taking care of myself and exercising has change everything for me. Teamiblends has sponsored my 30 day detox challenge to help get rid of toxins and my bloating for summer.

“I’m on day 7 right now and it’s so easy! I just drink their tea every single day in my favourite purple tumbler. I love taking it to shoots and the studio with me. If you are ready to be you best you this summer, use my code for 20 percent off your detox program when you check out. I want all of you to do the challenge with me.”

Many commented on the dangers of relying on ‘detox teas’, which has been flagged as unhealthy by many nutritionists.

However, most turned on the 24-year-old for her seemingly contradictory message, with one commenting:

“How has detox tea anything to do with self love and eating disorder recovery? Self love is about accepting oneself, not detoxing. I used to look up to you, but this is the lowest point ever. I bet the company needed a better person as a model, like you, so that their image wouldn’t be as negative as it is now. But you Demi, your brand has been a healthy one, but detoxing is far from that. This really is a big disappointment.”

One body-postive blogger also hit out at the singer saying:

“Accountability is important. Making excuses for them = privilege.”
