If your favourite way to unwind after a hard week is to curl up on the sofa with a glass of red, then you’ll be pleased to hear the following news. Drinking red wine could help you to lose weight.

According to a study, red wine can suppress your appetite and prevent you from overeating. Yes, really.

Researchers from Arizona State University discovered that when bees were fed resveratrol, a compound found in red wine, they ate less food afterwards. This is interesting because bees normally gorge themselves on sugary foods when they are freely available. The bees also became uninterested in diluted sugar solutions.

The study, which was published in the science journal Aging, revealed that red wine could have a similar effect on the appetites of humans.

“Because what we eat is such an important contributor to our physical health, we looked at the bees’ sensitivity to sugar and their willingness to consume it,” said Gro Amdam, one of the study’s authors.

“Bees typically gorge on sugar and while it’s the best thing for them, we know that eating too much is not necessarily a good thing,” he added.

Researchers believe that red wine suppresses appetite and stops you overeating.

The researchers are now hoping that the resveratrol found in red wine might be able to help in the fight against obesity by mimicking the effects of a low-fat diet and helping to prevent the onset of age-related diseases.

If you’re trying to watch your weight, it’s always a good idea to have a glass of red wine with a takeaway or while you’re out for a meal. It’ll help to fill you up and stop you from overeating.
