As part of the new Life Style Sports #GirlsRunTheWorld campaign, Michelle McMahon, Editor of Her.ie and Sue Murphy, TV&Film Editor, were challenged to run a 5k race after 12 weeks of training.
Last week, Michelle and I started to get ready for the challenge. First of all, we met with our trainer Peter Kern and Brian Stevens of PB3 Coaching to get an idea of our fitness levels and any past injuries we may have had.
On Wednesday, we paid a visit to Lifestyle Sports to get kitted out for our training. As well as informing us on the best clothing for the challenge, Life Style Sports also offers customers a free Gait Analysis service in select stores which provides runners with an insight into their individual running styles.
I sprained my knee quite badly a few years ago and even though I had been swimming up to the beginning of last year, I got a little lazy about running or training. Michelle on the other hand suffers from a back injury from a few years back. We both decided that we wanted to increase our fitness and so when the campaign came around, we both signed up.
After our initial meeting, Peter got us both to run for about five minutes to check if we had a good run. Within a few minutes, he had decided that we should probably try to run a 10k instead of 5.
Our first training session took place on Sandymount beach last week. During the session, Peter ran through some of the warm-ups and drills for running and toned up our technique, particularly so we wouldn’t injure ourselves. These included lunges, sideways plank, the plank, stretches and other drills which would ensure our arms and legs were moving correctly during the run.
Nutritionist Simon Devenney put together a programme for the next few weeks in order to maximise our nutrition. This mainly involved drinking 2-3 litres of water a day, eating more fruit and veg, more carbohydrates and plenty of protein like eggs and meat. I am actually a vegetarian so will have to work around my lack of meat with nuts, beans and eggs.
The below video is our first week of our training for #GirlsRunTheWorld. We will keep you posted on all the progress!
