Constipation can be uncomfortable, painful and not to mention embarrassing. Whether you’re changing your diets, or drinking a tonic, sometimes your best efforts leave you feeling bloated and in discomfort.

We’ve all felt discomfort at trying to use the toilet, but experts now say a warm drink and a light jog are the best ways to get your bowels moving.

Being avid tea drinkers, it has long been suspected that caffeine will aid the problem, but Dr Felice Schnoll-Sussman, a gastroenterologist at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University in the US has said it is the hot drink rather than the caffeine content.

Tense your bum every time you're waiting for the kettle to boil. Squeeze those buttocks hard and work your gluts! It’s something that we do a couple of times a day, our bottoms might as well benefit from it!

The study suggests coffee, tea or a cup of hot water will help stimulate the bowel, while widening the blood vessels and easing digestion.

As well as popping on the kettle, the research suggest physical exercise can encourage a trip to the toilet.

The study found that people with constipation should consider taking up jogging up and down their stairs, doing star jumps or stretches to stimulate the bowel.
