Being pregnant is one of the most exciting times for a mum-to-be.

It’s a time to be savoured, enjoyed and appreciated… and, whether you’re a first-timer or not, yoga can be a part of it.

Pre-natal yoga is both energising, relaxing and it’s a fantastic way to stay fit. Prenatal yoga can also help you prepare for labour and promote your baby’s health? It’s a beneficial activity that also serves as a balance throughout the exciting and exhausting process of pregnancy.

We’re here to tell you what it’s all about…

What is prenatal yoga?

Much like other childbirth-prep classes, yoga is an approach to exercise that includes stretching, mental focusing and breathing. Research suggests that prenatal yoga is safe and can have many benefits for pregnant women and their babies.

Some of the benefits include…

Improve sleep

Reduce stress and anxiety

Increase the strength, flexibility and endurance of muscles needed for childbirth

Decrease lower back pain, nausea, carpal tunnel syndrome, headaches and shortness of breath

Decrease the risk of preterm labour, pregnancy-induced hypertension and intrauterine growth restriction, a condition that slows a baby’s growth

As well as all those benefits, joining a yoga class can help you meet and bond with other pregnant women and share the stories and stress of being a new parent.

Perfect time to breathe, bond and relax…

What to expect at a class…

Breathing: Prenatal yoga breathing techniques may help you reduce or manage shortness of breath during pregnancy and work through contractions during labour.

Gentle Stretching: You are encouraged to stretch different areas of your body through their full range of motion, all in slow gentle movement.

Postures: You will move your body (gently!) into different positions aimed at developing your strength, flexibility and balance.

Relaxation: Time to relax, breathe and bond with your bond!

And finally…

When you’ve had your baby (Congratulations!), it’s a fantastic idea to visit some postnatal classes, or to inform your yoga instructor that you have had a baby recently.

This class will focus on stretching and building up your core strength again through a series of controlled movements.

And it’s still a great way to meet new mums!
