She might well have an Olympic gold medal but Katie Taylor has added yet another award to her name: the Irish Tatler Woman of the Year for 2012.

The 26-year-old boxing star, who was crowned an Olympic Champion during the summer, picked up the gong on Saturday night.

The moment Katie found out she had beaten Sofya Ochigava and won gold.

And she wasn’t the only woman to be honoured at the weekend. A Special Achievement Award was given to those who competed at the Paralympic Games including Fran Meehan, Catherine Walsh and Bethany Firth.

But it wasn’t all about the fantastic sporting achievements Ireland has enjoyed this year. Television personality Jennifer Maguire and actress-turned-singer Maria Doyle Kennedy were also among the 14 ladies celebrated on the night.

Maria Doyle Kennedy took home the music award on Saturday night.

Speaking about the event to the Sunday Independent, publisher and Dragon’s Den star Norah Casey said: “I love these awards because they are so inspiring… What could be better in the current climate than celebrating the best women in Ireland?”

We certainly can’t think of anything!
