When it comes to flashing a smile, it seems that the majority of us would rather just offer a close-mouthed grin. Why? Well according to a new survey, over a third of Irish people have broken or missing teeth. Eh…say cheese?

The Irish Daily Star reports that a lot of Irish people are actually embarrassed by the state of their teeth and that one in four of us try to blame it on the poor dental habits we had as children.

According to the survey, which was conducted by the Seapoint Dental Clinic, 86 per cent of people fillings (42 per cent have between 2-3 filings) and a massive 60 per cent of us are not happy with our smile. Unsurprisingly, having whiter teeth is the thing that people want the most.

The survey revealed that 84 per cent happily brushed their teeth twice a day, as recommended by dentists, but of this number, almost half said that they didn’t floss.

“Missing or decaying teeth not only impact on a person’s confidence and their social interactions but also on their health and wellbeing – so it’s important to have regular check-ups with your dentist,” said Dr Tom Linehan from the Seapoint Clinic.

Get your brush on: Do you brush twice a day?

As part of the survey, participants also voted for the Irish male and female celeb with the best smile. Do you want to know who topped the charts? Constantly-smiley Craig Doyle was voted number one for the fellas and the lovely Rosanna Davidson claimed the top spot for the girls.

So ladies, how do you feel about your own set of pearly whites? Are you happy to flash a grin every now and then?
