In today’s most stomach-churning news, an Adelaide supermarket have been fined more than AUD $200,000 after displaying food in store past its use-by date, with some products out of date by up to 40 days.
Seaford 7 Days Ltd and Supermarket Investments, pleaded guilty in the Adelaide Magistrates Court to a shocking total of 57 counts of breaching the Australian Food Act.
When sentencing the Aussie store, Magistrate Luke Davis said the health breaches were very serious and disturbingly had continued over a long period in 2012, despite it being scrutinised and put on notice by health inspectors.
“It is clear that these offences are the result of a systemic, widespread and negligent failure by those responsible,” said Davis though remarked that is was “perhaps surprising” that no member of the public actually complained about the supermarket.
The supermarket’s General Manager, Vince Violi, told AdelaideNow the supermarket had taken extensive action to ensure the events last year will not be repeated. Some of the staff at the supermarket have also been let go following the findings.
