An American ‘mommy blogger’ has been charged with the murder of her five-year-old son, with police believing that she poisoned him in order to receive sympathy from followers on the Internet.

Lacey Spears (25) wrote a blog about her son Garnett’s medical issues online and documented his symptoms and treatment with social media, including several posts outlining a deterioration in his condition and his eventual death.

However, police now believe that Lacey was poisoning her son by injecting him with sodium through a tube in his stomach and have charged her with second-degree murder and first degree manslaughter.

On his death, hospital workers found toxic levels of sodium in his blood and a subsequent investigation revealed that Spears took him into a hospital bathroom on January 17th and again on January 19th and administered sodium directly into his stomach. It was also stated in court that Spears had searched the Internet to study what effects large amounts of salt would have on the boy.

She is due in court on July 2nd.
