Today marks a very special day where we can go back and relive the toys and crafts of our childhood.

That’s right, today is National Play-Doh Day!

So in a bid to transport you back in time, here are six fun facts you mightn’t have known about the multicoloured toy.

1) Play-Doh was originally sold as wallpaper cleaner

Back in the 1930s, the now famous kid’s product was sold as a product to clean up wallpaper.

A classroom of children began using the product as an arts and crafts modelling compound and so, the window cleaner was revamped and marketed to schools in the 1950s.

2) Back in its infancy you could only buy it in one colour

That’s right, back when the product was just a simple window cleaner; it was only available in one colour: a murky off-white. When it hit the shelves they introduced red, blue and yellow. These days all the colours of the rainbow are available!

3) The product was briefly called “Kutol’s Rainbow Modeling Compound”

Definitely not as catchy as Play-Doh – thankfully someone saw the sense to change it!

4) Someone had the title as “Play-Doh Expert”

For a long time, Dr. Tien Liu who was an integral part of the Play-Doh team, had the brilliant title of Play-Doh Expert! Liu was the mastermind behind discovered the perfect formula for the original company which was Rainbow Crafts.

5) You can smell like Play-Doh!

It’s true, if you really want the smell of nostalgia, it can be yours! Demeter Fragrance Library worked with Hasbro (who now own the company) to create a fragrance in celebration of Play-Doh’s 50th anniversary.

According to Hasbro, the special fragrance is “meant for highly creative people, who seek a whimsical scent reminiscent of their childhood.”

6) Approximately two billion cans of Play-Doh have been sold

That’s about 980 million pounds of squishy-moulding goodness around the world. About 100 million cans are produced each year.

Happy National Play-Doh Day everyone!
