This is the reason that Sabrina Spellman never ended up on Riverdale

This definitely would have changed things.

Before she was bewitching the residents of Greendale in The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, it turns out that Sabrina Spellman almost appeared in another one of our favourite programmes.

Showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has admitted that the Riverdale team were considering introducing Sabrina to the CW drama in season one – and as the antagonist, too.

He said that the idea was that the series would switch things up, becoming more of an Afterlife With Archie kind of storyline rather than continuing with the mystery vibe.

He told Entertainment Weekly

“During season 1 of Riverdale — before Riverdale exploded and found its footing as sort of a noir, crime, pulp show — we had said, ‘Maybe season two will be like [the comic] Afterlife With Archie.

“We’ll do a big genre switch and it will be horror, and it will be Afterlife and Sabrina could come and be the antagonist’.

“There was even a time when we talked about the season 1 cliffhanger being the arrival of Sabrina.”

Aguirre-Sacasa admitted that for “various reasons” it no longer felt right to introduce Sabrina into Riverdale – although the big one was that the series became more of a crime show.

He continued:

“It felt like if Riverdale is crime and pulp and all that stuff, then Sabrina could be horror.

“It felt like there was a separation between Greendale and Riverdale — magic should exist in Greendale, but not in Riverdale. That was the thought.”

We’re still keeping our fingers crossed there will be some kind of cross-over, though – after all, stranger things have happened.

Riverdale returns for its third season on October 10 (with new episodes arriving on Netflix the next day). The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina premiers on October 26.
