The famous landmark cottage where The Quiet Man was filmed is set to be preserved thanks to a massive international campaign and Galway County Council.
The Council have voted that the house will be added to their Record of Protected Structures, thus ensuring that what remains of the cottage cannot be demolished.
The cottage, which is in Maam Co Galway, is currently in ruin and the vote to protect it was passed at a recent county council meeting after a massive campaign was launch by fans of the movie.
It has been over 60 years since filming began at the Galway location, while the campaign to save the cottage kicked off about 15 years ago. The petition to save the site gathered more than 8,000 signatures internationally thanks to the White O’Morn Foundation.
The council have now started the process to get the cottage, which is owned by Canadian man Gregory Ebbitt, officially declared as a protected structure and thus the house itself and the area around it will have strict planning regulations. This ensures that what remains of the house cannot be demolished.
