It’s a frightening and startling statistic but the Hunger Games: Catching Fire has become the first sole female-led film in 40 years to top the annual box office in 2013.
According to Huffington Post, Catching Fire took in a whopping $409.4 million in tickets sales up to January 9th of this year.
The closest contender to the top post was Iron Man 3 which took in $409 million.
Although there have been various wins for women in cinema this year that came in the form of Frozen and Gravity, Catching Fire is one of the very few which is led by a solo female.

The last film to achieve success like this was the wonderful Exorcist from 1973. Yes, a whopping forty years ago.
Despite the fact that there have been strong female characters in top box office films over the last forty years, they have almost always been accompanied by a male lead. Take Titanic for instance.
SlashFilm have also noted that 2014 will include the release of the third Hunger Games instalment while everyone is also eagerly awaiting Maleficent.
Jennifer Lawrence, keep doing us proud.
