Don’t go Mary!

The Great British Bake Off that we know and love is never going to be the same again. After the leading lady, Mary Berry, confirmed she wouldn’t be moving with the show to Channel 4 it was the final blow to the series.

She followed the show’s presenters Mel and Sue after they quit. The only person to remain was Paul Hollywood who will still front the show when it comes back. Who will join him is yet to be announced with various different people being suggested for the role.

Mary had first issued a statement saying that she would not move out of “loyalty” to the BBC. Her statement read:

“My decision to stay with the BBC is out of loyalty to them, as they have nurtured me, and the show, that was a unique and brilliant format from day one

“What a privilege and honour it has been to be part of seven years of magic in a tent. I am just sad for the audience who may not be ready for change, I hope they understand my decision.”

“The Bake Off family – Paul, Mel and Sue have given me so much joy and laughter.

“I wish the programme, crew and future bakers every possible success and I am so very sad not to be a part of it. Farewell to soggy bottoms.”

She hadn’t referenced the new show until now. According to The Mirror, she spoke about the new series at the National Reality TV Awards, saying:

“It’s going to be different but I’m sure Paul will carry it on successfully.”

She also told The Sun:

“Mel and Sue are brilliant and we had a marvellous time on the programme and that’s how it will remain.

“You’ll never hear people swear. It’s a family programme. Mum, gran, everyone enjoys it and they all get down to baking afterwards. I’m proud of everyone. It gets 14 million – more than the football!”

We’ll miss you, Mary.
