John Altman has spoken out about his upcoming exit from EastEnders, admitting that it was an emotional time for him.

The actor, who has played the character of Nick Cotton on and off since 1985, revealed on today’s episode of This Morning that he is being written out for good (like we haven’t heard that before!).

He explained: “I think it’s probably he’s come to the end of his run. It’s been 30 years – I don’t know how much more he can do, apart from create World War Three… when they said that he was going to meet his demise, it was quite a big decision.”

Apparently John’s final scenes will be with June Brown who plays his onscreen mother Dot Branning.

“I felt very sad as well, leaving the character behind…During our final scenes, I did shed some tears”

He added: “(His departure is) quite low-key in a way… But suffice to say, the story is quite powerful and I think they resolve quite a few things together as well.”
